WHITFORD HOUSE New-Build Residence, Whitford

There are sites that make the architect's job easy. A parcel of land on the Whitford hills, with a commanding view across the valley to the azure waters of the Pohutukawa Coast, is exactly that kind of site. The brief almost writes itself β€” orient everything toward the view, and don't get in the way of it.

Macfie Architecture's response is a U-shaped residence that wraps around the landscape rather than sitting in front of it. The configuration places the open-plan kitchen, living, and dining spaces β€” alongside a generously proportioned scullery and powder room β€” at the heart of the home, with a formal lounge, master suite, three further bedrooms, and a three-car garage arranged across the wings. Every living space and bedroom opens directly onto the outdoor areas, the Whitford fields and coastal panorama always present and always central.

The architectural language is grounded and considered. Recycled brick exterior walls bring warmth and texture to the facade, floor-to-ceiling windows ensure the views are never interrupted, and high-pitched gable-end ceilings with exposed trusses give the interior the scale and character its setting demands.

A second phase will complete the picture β€” an infinity swimming pool and landscape design that will draw the horizon into the garden itself.
