WHITFORD HOUSE | RURAL NEW-BUILD

A parcel of land on the Whitford hills, with a commanding view across the valley to the waters of the Pohutukawa Coast. The brief almost writes itself: orient everything toward the view, and don't get in the way of it.

Macfie Architecture's response is a U-shaped residence that wraps around the landscape rather than sitting in front of it. The open-plan kitchen, living and dining spaces sit at the heart of the home, alongside a generous scullery and powder room, with a formal lounge, master suite, three further bedrooms and a three-car garage arranged across the wings. Every living space and bedroom opens directly onto the outdoor areas, the Whitford fields and coastal panorama always present.

Recycled brick exterior walls bring warmth and texture to the facade, floor-to-ceiling windows keep the views uninterrupted, and high-pitched gable-end ceilings with exposed trusses give the interior the scale its setting demands.

A second phase will add an infinity swimming pool and landscape design, drawing the horizon into the garden itself.
