THE AMERICAN COLONIAL Heritage Renovation, East Auckland
A 1960s American colonial purchased as a deceased estate — tired, underinsulated, and in need of everything. For two first-time homeowners with a clear vision and a considered budget, it was exactly the right kind of challenge.
Macfie Architecture took on the full scope, reconfiguring the lower level to allow the dual living, kitchen, and dining spaces to flow naturally into a new outdoor entertainment area and landscaped garden. Full insulation was completed throughout before attention turned to the interior, where the brief was as precise as it was appealing: crisp white, modern, but paying genuine homage to the home's colonial character.
The result honours that brief at every turn. A classically inspired bathroom with a clawfoot tub and butler's sinks nods to the home's origins without mimicking them. Facade fireplaces in both the formal lounge and master bedroom restore a sense of occasion to the rooms that deserve it most. Throughout, the palette is restrained and the detailing considered — a modern interior that knows exactly where it came from.
Completed on a tight budget. Finished to a standard that belies it entirely.
Project Scope: concept design, developed design, resource consent, building consent, on-site monitoring.
