NORTHCOTE POINT MID-CENTURY | Mid-Century Renovation & Contemporary Addition, Northcote Point

The mid-century bach has a particular place in New Zealand's architectural imagination -unpretentious, well-proportioned, and quietly ahead of its time in the way it reached toward the outdoors. This 1950s Northcote Point example had all of that latent potential. It simply needed someone to unlock it.

Macfie Architecture's renovation and addition transformed the bach into a sophisticated family home without disturbing the bones that made it worth keeping. A new entrance and front door announce the change in ambition from the street, while inside, floor-to-ceiling windows and large stacking doors were introduced throughout the living spaces β€” the indoor-outdoor connection that mid-century design always aspired to, finally delivered in full.

Large in-situ steps flow from the living areas into the backyard, creating a series of informal hang-out spaces that blur the boundary between inside and out with an ease that feels entirely natural. Two new bathrooms and hardwood floors throughout complete the picture - warm, grounded, and in keeping with the home's own character.

The result is a mid-century home that has finally become what it always had the potential to be β€” sophisticated, light-filled, and designed for the way a modern family actually lives.

Project Scope - concept design, developed design, resource consent, building consent, on-site monitoring.
