KOHIMARAMA TOWNHOUSE DEVELOPMENT | FOUR-UNIT NEW-BUILD

The heritage house at the front of the section was never going to move. The question was what could stand behind it without diminishing it.

A couple with a long-term vision for their Kohimarama site enlisted Macfie Architecture to design four new units on the subdivided land, contrasting with the original dwelling rather than imitating it, and deferring to it in scale. Their teenage sons worked alongside the professional team on site, which says something about the spirit in which the project was undertaken.

The brief called for a townhouse development that would sit with Kohimarama's established character rather than imposing on it. The result is four expansive units, each with two to three bedrooms, bathrooms and ensuites.

The heritage residence was preserved throughout, the new development arranged in dialogue with the existing dwelling rather than overwhelming it.
