GREY LYNN CALIFORNIAN BUNGALOW Heritage Renovation, Grey Lynn

Adjacent to Grey Lynn Park, on one of the area's most desirable streets, this Californian bungalow had everything going for it — heritage character, generous proportions, and a position that most Auckland homeowners would jump at. What it needed was a renovation equal to its potential.

Macfie Architecture undertook a comprehensive overhaul, beginning with structural and drainage improvements that would underpin the home's long-term resilience before turning attention to the spaces within.

The front entrance and stairwell were redesigned to lead into an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining space with a consistent three-metre ceiling height throughout — generous, light-filled, and entirely suited to the Californian bungalow's inherent sense of volume. Oak parquet flooring runs throughout, a shaker-style kitchen anchors the living spaces, and beautifully tiled bathrooms and ensuites complete the interior with the finish the home deserved.

The outdoor entertaining space was revamped with built-in clear panels offering a considered view into the hallway below — a quietly clever detail that rewards a second look. Throughout, every original bungalow feature was preserved, restored, and celebrated.

A home that wears its heritage with pride and its renovation with confidence.
