Daily Bread, Point Chevalier ADNZ Resene Commercial Design Award Winner 2020
Point Chevalier's most beloved corner has a history worth savouring. Originally designed in the 1930s by architect Daniel B. Patterson for the Auckland Savings Bank, this neo-classical landmark sat dormant before Macfie Architecture was commissioned to breathe new life into its bones.
The brief was demanding: transform a heritage building into a fully functioning commercial kitchen and dining destination, without losing the soul of what made it worth saving in the first place.
The solution required equal parts sensitivity and structural ambition. A complete building upgrade brought the 1930s frame into compliance with modern commercial requirements, while original detailing was carefully retained throughout. Custom steel joinery now opens the interior to a light-filled outdoor dining area, Italian marble benches bring a quiet refinement to the counter, and restored timber panelling continues a conversation with the building's neo-classical bones.
The result is a space that doesn't choose between old and new β it holds both at once. Heritage architecture and wabi-sabi modernism, in a corner bakery that feels like it was always meant to be there.
Project Scope: internal reconfiguration, external addition concept design, resource consent management, developed design, council building consent approval management, on-site monitoring.
