DAILY BREAD HERITAGE RENOVATION - WINNER ADNZ Resene COMMERCIAL DESIGN AWARD 2020

The transformation of Point Chevalier’s iconic former bank into a working commercial kitchen and dining destination is a study in balance — preserving heritage while embracing modern function.

Originally designed in the 1930s by architect Daniel B. Patterson for the Auckland Savings Bank, the neo-classical building closed its doors to the public in 2016. Its rebirth required a complete structural upgrade and facility overhaul to meet the rigorous demands of a commercial kitchen and to become one of Auckland’s bakeries du jour.

The design process demanded both sensitivity and precision. Original features were carefully retained while integrating modern building codes and functional requirements. Custom steel joinery now opens to a light-filled outdoor dining area, Italian marble benches bring refinement to the interior, and restored timber panelling pays homage to the building’s neo-classical character.

The result is a harmonious blend of heritage architecture and wabi-sabi modernism.

Project scope: internal reconfiguration, external addition concept design, resource consent management, developed design, council building consent approval management, on-site monitoring.
