Director Profile: Michael Macfie of MACFIE ARCHITECTURE

Michael Macfie is a practicing architectural designer, producing a considerable body of work, in all facets of design, over his 18-year career.

Michael is the founding director of Macfie Architecture, launching the practice alongside his wife Rebecca (Interiors Director) in 2006.

Situated in a historical loft space in Devonport, Auckland - the family led practice of six has become synonymous with heritage zoned residential renovation and extension design, as well as architecturally significant new-builds.

His introduction to architecture was by way of training and working as a draftsperson for his father's construction company. After completing a Bachelor’s degree in Auckland, he worked in England, Australia, and New Zealand.

With wide practical experience in design, building, heritage, and contemporary architecture, Michael has built a large portfolio of residential design projects, from concept through to detailed design. His passion and focus is on the successful integration of new architecture with old, in the adaptive re-use of heritage buildings across New Zealand.

Michael is particularly drawn to residential alteration and renovation work, where his strong grasp of historic form and detail comes to the fore. Michael develops excellent relationships with clients and is committed to the idea that open communication between architectural designer, client and contractor, is the key to achieving quality results which exceed expectations.

Upholding the philosophy that architecture should be accessible to all, regardless of scale and budget, Michael continues to champion New Zealand's architectural heritage and identity through design and form.
